Youth councils
"Youth councils are youth influence groups that are not affiliated with any party or religion and operate in municipalities and welfare areas to promote the interests of local young people." Suomen Nuorisovaltuustojen Liitto - NUVA ry
Youth councils have been statutory (Municipal Act, Welfare Area Act) since 2015. Youth councils act as a voice for young people, a place for growth and learning, and promote issues they find important. Below you will find a small summary of my own years as a youth councilor.
During my youth council career, I was able to work in almost every possible role in the youth council field. My path began as a sixth grader in the fall of 2017, when I joined the municipal Kaarina youth council. I spent the first few years learning things and youth council work first became a hobby and later even the most important thing in my life.
For the first time, I was elected as a youth representative to the Social and Health Committee for the years 2019-2021. During that time, the corona pandemic and the Marin government's social and health reform were among the things that hit me, which were undoubtedly memorable to watch from the stands. The following term, I was able to serve on the Education Committee and as the secretary of the youth council. In my fourth term in Kaarina, I served as the chair of the youth council, directing the activities of the youth council - we achieved a lot.
I joined the national union of local youth councils in Finland during the corona year of 2020, when I participated in the first remote events. I was trained as a local trainer for autumn 2021, after which I have trained dozens of youth councils around Finland. I also held positions of trust within the association for 3 years - my main tasks were improving regional operations ("district reform"), activating and renewing custom training together with our employees. I served as the president of the Southwest Finland district for one year (2022), rising to the union board for the following years and even becoming the union's 1st vice-chairman. I also aimed for the presidency at the Tampere union meeting in 2024 - but lost the vote. The loss was tough, because the dream of a full-time position in youth advocacy was shattered for the time being and because the elections were particularly difficult to hold. The last six months of the chairmanship of the youth council went more or less in a civil servant style.
In addition, I was trusted to act in various supra-municipal positions along the way. Most significantly, I served as one of the first members and deputy members (2022-2024) of the regional youth council in Southwest Finland. My own project was also to get youth representation on the Föli board - we got a seat there and also on the waste management board.
Joining the youth council is the best decision of my life, the path taught me a lot of good things and I found a community that saved me. I also got to experience emotions from all sides in the activities.
I am always interested in issues related to youth councils and my youth councilness will never disappear.

Q&A
1. What is a youth council?
A youth council is a statutory body for influencing young people in municipalities and welfare areas. The municipality or the local authority must guarantee the youth council the conditions for its operation and the opportunity to influence decisions.
Youth council is a synonym for youth council.
2. How can I get into a youth council?
The practices vary somewhat across Finland. In most municipalities, elections are held to elect a certain number of young people to the youth council. In some municipalities, you can join by expressing your interest. It is worth checking the municipality's website.
The practice is somewhat more complicated in the case of welfare areas.
3. Where can I get more info?
The easiest way to get more information is from the website of the Union of local youth councils in Finland and by asking us, and this information should also be available through the municipality's own website and employees.
In addition to advocacy and education activities, the Finnish Association of Youth Councils acts as an expert in youth inclusion. We also participated in the Orpo government's government negotiations in spring 2023. In addition, we actively work with various actors in the public sector and also with other sectors where possible.
