Trump’s threats shake Nato’s stability and creates global insecurity

On Monday, Nordic Defense ministers held a meeting in Nato's headquarters in Brussels because of the security threat posed by the United States to Europe. The situation is exceptional and increases global insecurity.

During his second term in office Donald Trump, president of the United States, has repeatedly threatened other independent countries, including Greenland which belongs to a Nato-ally Denmark. Earlier the USA invaded Venezuela and Trump has continuously threatened to use military force if he can't get Greenland in another way.

Trump's United States has revealed its true face to the public.

International justice or even a membership in the same military alliance does not prevent threats for independent countries or using economic policies as weapons. The USA is setting new tariffs for Finland and other European countries.

Are the United States committed to transatlantic co-operation? What does Nato mean to Trump's United States?

The United States threats violate the rights of countries and nations to self-determination. The Greenlanders have strongly stated their will to stay as an autonomous zone in the Kingdom of Denmark rather than joining the United States.

Greenland and the Arctic zone are critical and major areas from several perspectives, for example global warming, nature and international security. Trump's national security argument is rather irrelevant than relevant because the US army has had strong military bases in Greenland since the 1950s.

A breath of past imperialistic power politics is not welcome whether in the form of military threats nor economic pressure, such as attempts to purchase Greenland. Because of the USA's domestic instability and alarming changes, especially in minority rights, the possibility of fulfillment of Greenlanders civil rights as a part of the USA is impossible.

European Nato-allies must work together and stand with Denmark. Weakening transatlantic co-operation must lead Finland to seek alternative and more reliable security guarantees, for example from the Coalition of the Willing.

Russia's violent invasion of Ukraine has awakened many Europeans to the realities of their own security challenges. Trump's threats should keep us vigilant.
