I will not seek trust for a membership of the national board

13/04/2026

I have had the opportunity to serve as the Chair of the Social Democratic Youth of Southwest Finland for about a year and a half, and I have enjoyed working in this role. There have been many long days, meetings, and difficult matters, but I have not encountered anything particularly negative.

I am also satisfied with how much I have learned through the organization's activities within the youth league, and I consider the situation of the district and its local branches to be stable. I am also proud of what I have accomplished as the district chair. However, I cannot ignore the fact that there is still room for improvement. There is—we need new members, successful activation and engagement of existing members, diversification of fundraising channels, daily communications, and the resources to realize the ambitious goals that are regularly updated in members' meetings.

This, however, cannot be achieved without a large number of motivated and passionate workers as well as active local executive boards. It must be acknowledged that such a situation cannot be created by a single person—or even a larger group—and that the resources of the broader party family are unlikely to increase significantly in the coming years.

My conclusion, based on several years of involvement in organizational activities, is that the work done in organizations does not always receive the fair compensation that is typically sought from work. However, the work done in organizations is invaluable, if only for its role in preventing social exclusion.

While this remains true, I also note that the purpose of organizational activity is not to be a source of income. In youth organizations, it is largely volunteer work, and therefore it is both understandable and advisable to set personal boundaries that suit oneself. It is important to maintain a healthy balance between organizational work and free time.

I intend to remain active in the youth league's activities in Southwest Finland and the Turku region, even if I am not elected as Vice Chair of the national organization. I will also decline to run for a position on the national board, as I feel I would not be able to operate in the way I would like as a board member. I also find the role of district chair more rewarding than membership on the national board, and I believe my skills are better utilized within the youth district. Therefore, I will complete my current term as district chair if I am not elected as Vice Chair of the national organization.

In my capacity as district chair, I support Kasper Sihvo from Satakunta and Janne Tikkanen from Southwest Finland for positions on the national board.

In the vote for members of the national board, it is possible to vote for multiple candidates, and fortunately the situation is such that there are applicants who are more enthusiastic than I am (for this position), cooperative, and forward-looking in their approach.
