2023-25 term

Kaarina's youth council 2023-2025
Kaarina's youth council 2023-2025

My fourth term on the youth council began the day after the charity concert, and it didn't take long before we were at the organizational meeting with the new youth councilors. During my election campaign, I announced that my term would be my last, because I felt that 8 years of youth council affairs were enough :)

I had decided to apply for the position of chairman to bring about a change in the youth council's internal management, communication and division of responsibilities. I lost the election by one vote to the then chairman. This was very disappointing and I ended up happily leaving the duties of the chairmanship to others and focusing on the social and health side, i.e. the regional youth council of the welfare area and the welfare section.

However, to my surprise, the chairman resigned from the council, creating another opportunity for me to pursue my dream job. After months of consideration, I ran for office and won! Now, during my presidency, the youth council has continued its familiar activities, but also gained new momentum. The first new experiment we were able to participate in was the shadow budgeting experiment.

In the spring of 2024, we organized the first student council cooperation day and made two council initiatives. The council initiatives concerned getting a youth worker at Kaarina upper secondary school and providing free breakfast or snacks at Kaarina schools. In addition, I was invited to give a speech at the laying of the foundation stone of the new youth center in Piispanlähte. After these, we did EU election communication.

We also got new faces from Kaarina to join the Aktiiväivä in Vaasa.

In the fall, we implemented a mental health campaign and, in cooperation with other advocacy organizations, organized an open house evening in the Kaarina hall. In the evening, we had multiple Paralympic winner and medalist Toni Piispanen as a speaker.

Personally, the most significant moment in the fall was the awarding of the Kaarina medal. In November 2024, it was decided that I would receive one for meritorious work for the people of Kaarina and young people.

In the spring of 2025, we made a council initiative to include lunch for young summer workers in salary costs, organized a student council day for the second time, and represented at various events. In the youth council meetings, we also discussed Pride events in Kaarina and the youth council elections, which will be held at the end of April. A record number of candidates (29) were nominated for the elections. In the youth council elections, we were able to increase the voter turnout and start an election campaign in almost every seat.
